Medicine You Can Manufacture

Hey friends, Lewis here.

We've talked about all the essential physical building blocks for recovery: The Hustle, proper nutrition, and essential hydration. Now, let’s talk about the most powerful medicine you can manufacture yourself:

Laughter and Positivity!

When you are deep in the daily grind of recovery, it’s easy to focus only on the struggle. But here is the truth: A positive emotional state is not just a nice bonus; it’s a powerful tool that enhances your ability to heal.

This is your permission to be happy and use joy as a deliberate strategy for recovery.

The Science of Joy: Fueling Neuroplasticity

We know that neuroplasticity—the brain's ability to rewire and form new connections—is fueled by effort, repetition, and rest. But did you know it’s also optimized by emotional state?

When you laugh or feel genuine joy, your body releases a cocktail of beneficial chemicals that directly support brain health:

  • Endorphins:

These are natural painkillers and stress relievers. They improve your mood and create a better environment for focused rehabilitation.

  • Improved Circulation:

Laughter literally increases blood flow, sending more oxygen and nutrients to your brain and body, which supports the creation of those new neural pathways.

  • Mental Break:

Pushing through fatigue and frustration is exhausting. Laughter gives your brain a much-needed mental break, allowing you to reset and return to your rehab sessions with renewed focus.

Simply put, happiness isn't a distraction from recovery; it's a catalyst for it.

The Comedian's Dilemma: When Jokes Don't Land Correctly

For those of us with speech differences like dysarthria, using humor can be complicated. Lots of times, when you have bad speech like mine, jokes don't land right and may offend others when you're just joking around.

The slight slur, the altered tone, or the involuntary pause can disrupt the comedic timing, making a sarcastic comment sound serious or a playful jab sound genuinely hostile.

This is the emotional tax we pay for altered speech, and it can sometimes make you want to avoid humor altogether. Don't let it!

A Simple Strategy for Humor:

  • Read the Room (And Your Listener):

Stick to humor with people who know and trust you. Your Core Support System understands your intent, even if the delivery is a little off.

  • Embrace Physical Comedy:

Humor doesn't always need words! A well-timed silly face, a small gesture, or a laugh at yourself can be universally understood.

  • The Quick Clarifier:

If a joke falls flat or you see a doubtful expression, follow up immediately with a light touch or simple phrase: "Just kidding!" or "That was my joke voice!"

Don't let the fear of misunderstanding steal this vital medicine from you. The laughter you generate, even if you're the only one who truly gets it, is worth the effort.

Positivity is not pretending everything is fine; it's acknowledging the struggle while choosing to focus energy on solutions and gratitude.

  • Practice Gratitude:

Take a few minutes each day to genuinely list three things you are grateful for. This simple mental exercise shifts your brain's focus away from deficits.

  • Seek Out Joy:

What makes you laugh? Watch that show, call that friend, or revisit that favorite book. Make time for these activities with the same commitment you make to physical therapy.

Remember, every burst of genuine laughter, every moment of gratitude, is an investment in your well-being. It is medicine you can manufacture, and it’s free!

What is the one activity (a show, a memory, or a person) that never fails to make you laugh during a tough day? Share it in the comments below!
